TOKYO, July 27: Canada set up a quarterfinal clash against Brazil while Great Britain face Australia in the Tokyo Olympics women’s football tournament. Sweden, will meet Japan while the Netherlands will have its task cut out as they take on the United States.
Brazil vs Zambia
Andressa scored in the 19th minute and Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s Olympic soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over Zambia on Tuesday.
United States vs Australia
The United States did what was necessary to advance at the Tokyo Olympics, it just wasn’t exactly the high-flying offensive juggernaut that the Americans are known for.
The U.S. women made it through to the quarterfinals of the women’s soccer tournament after a 0-0 draw with Australia.
Britain vs Canada
Britain earned first place in its group in the women’s Olympic soccer tournament on Tuesday with an own-goal in the final minutes for a 1-1 draw with Canada.
Adriana Leon scored in the 55th minute to give Canada the lead before the equalizing goal in the 85th.
Japan vs Chile
Mina Tanaka scored the lone goal Tuesday to help Japan beat Chile 1-0 and set up a quarterfinal match against Sweden in the women’s Olympic soccer competition.
Tanaka scored from a close range finish in the 77th minute at the Miyagi Stadium.
The hosts finished third in Group E but still progressed to the knockout phase.
Sweden vs New Zealand
Anna Anvegard and Madelen Janogy scored a goal each Tuesday to help Sweden finish Group G with a perfect record after a 2-0 victory over New Zealand in the women’s Olympic soccer competition.
Anvegard headed in the opening goal in the 17th minute and Janogy knocked in the other in the 30th.
Sweden is looking to reach its second straight Olympic final after losing to Germany in the gold medal match at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
Netherlands vs China
Lieke Martens, Lineth Beerensteyn and Vivianne Miedema scored two goals each and the Netherlands secured its spot in the quarterfinals of the women’s Olympic soccer tournament with an 8-2 victory over China on Tuesday.
