SHILLONG, Aug 8: The Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MSERC), on Friday, conducted hearing on the petition filed by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) employees on the contentious special electricity tariff offered to members of Byrnihat Industries Association (BIA).
The petitionm, filed on December 17 last year, stated that the arrangement of the special tariff will further weaken the revenue returns to the already financially stressed MeECL.
Moreover, many political parties had moved Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma urging upon the government to look into the arrangement. (Contd on P-4)

(Contd from P-3) The tariff rate to the industries is lesser than what is given to the general public and perhaps maybe the only kind of tariff in any parts of India where the public pays more than the industries.
The rate offered to Industries under BIA is flat rate of energy charge of Rs 4.9 per unit without fixed charge whereas all other categories of consumers including domestic consumers pay both the energy charge as well as the fixed charge.
