Two drown in Ri Bhoi waters; bodies retrieved

NONGPOH, Aug 8: The bodies of two persons who drowned in separate incidents in Ri Bhoi district were retrieved by the Search and Rescue Team (SRT) of the Fire and Emergency Service on Sunday.
Forty-two-year-old Yeowanki Dkhar of Sunny Hill had went on a fishing trip to Umiam. Police say the deceased drowned while swimming in the river around 3 pm. It was also informed that his friends had shouted for help after they saw him drowning.
After the SRT arrived, they managed to retrieve his body, and it was then shifted to Police Investigation Cell (PIC), Umroi.
The Additional District Magistrate of Ri Bhoi had granted exemption from post-mortem examination following the request of the family members.
In another incident, a twenty-two-year-old boy, Bakyrpang Makdoh, drowned at Umpaiklong pond in Mawrong village near Umsning on Sunday evening.
According to police, the deceased along with his friends had arrived at the pond to wash vehicle but drowned while swimming in the pond. The SRT team also retrieved his body out of the water.
