MAWKYRWAT, Aug 23: A conglomerate of organisations or South West Khasi Hills under the umbrella of Ka Sur na Shaphang Shathie Sepngi jong ka Ri Khasi, on Monday, said it will organise a peace rally in Mawkyrwat on August 28 to condemn the ‘fake encounter’ of former HNLC General Secretary, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew and demand justice to the family and the ‘Jaitbynriew’ as a whole.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting held at the office of the KSU Mawkyrwat Circle, president of the KSU South West Khasi Hills, Forwardman Nongrem, said that the organisations through the rally want to tell the government that the people of South West Khasi Hills are united against any kind of “oppression and brutal killing”.
“…we have decided to put pressure on the government that it should give justice to the family of Bah Cheristerfield Thangkhiew and to condemn the ‘police brutality’, which seems to have been started to rise again in our state. We have also decided to write to the MLA/MDC of Mawkyrwat, Ranikor and Mawsynram constituencies insisting that they should put pressure on the government so that as ‘Jaitbynriew’ we will get justice as soon as possible because we have lost many leaders and members in this kind of incidents,” Nongrem said.
He called upon the people of the district and of Mawsynram Block in East Khasi Hills as well as other parts of the state to come forward and attend the rally along with ‘black flag’.
Nongrem added that the locals will lend their support to the people of Mawlai and family of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
The ‘peace rally’ will commence at 1 PM from the junction of the C&RD Block Office, Mawlangwir, and culminate at Mawkyrwat market, he informed. After the rally, a candlelight vigil will be organised at Mawkyrwat.
