SHILLONG, Sep 1: Years after Shillong was selected as a Smart City, the work on at least two projects under the nationwide mission has finally taken off.
The state capital was included in the Smart City project in June 2018 after which the Shillong Smart City Limited (SCCL) was constituted.
The SCCL website says construction activities for the Polo commercial complex started in November 2020. The site names Badri Rai & Co. as the contractor and marks November 2022 as the expected time of completion of the project.
The commercial complex will have six stories besides a stilt and the total built-up area is 12,539 sq. mt.
The other project for which construction has started is the redevelopment of the Municipal Market and the parking lot at Laitumkhrah.
The construction started in August last year and the contractors are Collinstar Sawkmie and Shrolenson Marbaniang (joint venture).
The expected month of completion of the project is August 2022.
Under the Smart City project, the state government plans to construct a total of 6 km of smart roads as a pilot project at 16 locations of Shillong.
The road length would be extended to 25 km depending on the success of the pilot project. The smart road project is to be taken up at a cost of Rs 36 crore by the PWD (National Highway).
In addition, the government would construct rainwater harvesting systems at various locations of the city at an estimated cost of Rs 23 crore for which the tender was floated earlier this year.
