SHILLONG, Sep 5: United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh on Sunday said the move to dislodge the Assembly Speaker is the outcome of one-upmanship in the Congress camp.
He said the return of Lok Sabha member Vincent Pala to state politics as MPCC chief has pointed to infighting in Congress.
“People are asking why Pala, chosen to represent the state thrice in Parliament, has come back to state politics,” Mawthoh said, adding this could only mean everything is not well within Congress.
“There are three groups in the Congress camp and with Pala’s return, there is a jostle to project who among them is the best leader,” he said.
Another reason behind the Congress move to target the Speaker is their failed attempt to bring the UDP into their fold, Mawthoh said.
“The Congress is targeting him just because he is the president of the UDP and their attempts to dislodge the government failed,” he said.
Stating that petty politics did not behove of the reputation of Congress as the grand old party, Mawthoh said: “No one is stopping them from pinpointing the shortcomings of the government, but moving a resolution to oust the Speaker without any justification is the height of desperation.”
