SHILLONG, Sep 13: Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has completed two years in office on Monday.
Lyngdoh, a three-time MLA of the United Democratic Party (UDP) from Mairang, was elected as the Speaker after the post had fallen vacant following the demise of former Speaker Donkupar Roy on July 28, 2019.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Metbah Lyngdoh said that he had never dreamt that he would become the Assembly Speaker.
“As a youth, I used to pass this Meghalaya Assembly Secretariat at Khyndai Lad. But now I am here sitting in the Speaker’s chair. Life is so unpredictable,” Lyngdoh said.  He, however, made it clear that the public will always be a priority for him, whom he will serve to the best of his capacity in any role.
“I am here to work and give my best. I would be more than happy if my small contributions can help to improve the functioning in the Assembly Secretariat,” the Speaker said.
Asked about his top priority at present, Lyngdoh cited the new Assembly building project in Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong Township.
“It is more than 20 years we are yet to have our permanent Assembly building after the 125-year-old structure that housed the Meghalaya Legislative building was burnt in a devastating fire on January 9, 2001,” he said.
He hopes that the new Assembly building can be completed next year when the state celebrates 50 years of statehood, which, according to Metbah, would be a great thing.
“I am following up the progress of the project on a daily basis. We are targeting to complete this project by this coming December. Let us hope we manage to achieve this target,” he said.
