EJH first dist to implement Faecal Sludge Management, Septage Plant projects: DC

KHLIEHRIAT, Oct 2: East Jaintia Hills on Saturday became the first district to implement the Faecal Sludge Management and Seepage Plant projects in Meghalaya.
Informing this during the inaugural programme of the projects at Khliehriat West, East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, E Kharmalki, informed that is a non-electrical sewage plant that uses aerobic technology and how a bio-rock technology is used in the filtering process of the sewage treatment plant.
The DC also informed that various other projects will be implemented in the near future.
Meanwhile, Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla, who inaugurated the District Mineral Foundation Trust-funded projects as the chief guest, argued that more conservation projects can be executed with the joint contribution of the District Minerals Fund (DMF)and the village leaders.
Urging the people to work together at the grassroots level to safeguard the environment, he said, “There is a need to balance economic development and environmental protection.”
He also lauded the efforts of the Swachh Bharat team from the district in raising awareness among the masses by organising programmes on sanitation and cleanliness.
During the day-long programme, Chiehruhphi village was declared as the first Open Defecation-Free(ODF) Plus village in East Jaintia Hills, the award for which was handed over by the Social Welfare Minister to the village headman.
The Swachhata Champion Award 2021 was also conferred upon the headman of Lamyrsiang Village and Cham Cham Village for their contribution towards the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission.
The Best Swachhata Champion Award 2021 under the category of Best Swachhghari was awarded to First Suchen from Khliehriat C&RD Block and Arly Papeng from Saipung C&RD Block.
The NSS Unitfrom Jaintia Eastern College also received an award for their contribution to the success of Swachh Bharat Mission.
