Plea to disallow setting up of coke plants in Maweit

NONGSTOIN, Oct 7: Calling on West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner here, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP), Maweit Circle, has appealed to the DC to debar any individual or company from setting up coke factories in the Maweit area.
After meeting the DC, president of the FKJGP, Anthony Umiong, informed media persons that the organisation has sent a clear message that the proposals of setting up coke factories in Maweit area will not be entertained as the people are not ready to accept such plans.
The FKJGP also met the Syiem of Hima Nongstoin, EP Syiem, with regard to the matter and urged the latter to not grant any permission to individuals or companies to establish coke factories in the area.
The people of the area are unaware about the advantages and disadvantages of coke factories, the FKJGP said, adding that they are scared about their agricultural crops and the environment of Maweit area getting affected.
The people, however, are aware that setting up of coke plants will also pave way for influx, the FKJGP said.
