Khalin Joshi takes lead at Jaipur Open with round of 61
Jaipur, Oct 12: Khalin Joshi sunk in an eagle and nine birdies to fire a scorching nine-under 61 for the first round lead at the Jaipur Open, here on Tuesday. The Bengaluru golfer had two bogeys. Rookie Kartik Sharma of Gurugram and M Dharma, another Bengaluru-based pro, struck error-free rounds of eight-under 62 consisting of an eagle and six birdies each to hold joint second position. He got consecutive birdies on the 12th, 13th and 14th before recovering from the bunker for a birdie on the 17th and another birdie on the par-5 18th. The icing on the cake was the eagle on the par-5 eighth hole where he drained a 10-footer. (PTI)

Amandeep leads strong field in 10th leg of Hero WPGT
Chandigarh, Oct 12: Amandeep Drall leads a strong field of Indians who are fresh from their European sojourn as they tee off in the 10th leg of the Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour at the Chandigarh Golf Club here on Wednesday. Amandeep, who has had a good season on the Ladies European Tour Access Series with a few Top-10 finishes, will be joined by Vani Kapoor, who had a modest season. Gaurika Bishnoi had some very good finishes too, while Pranavi Urs and rookie Durga Nittur are also back after playing in Europe. Amandeep is coming off a fine streak that included three Top-10 finishes in her last four starts. (PTI)

Costa Rica’s Campbell, Ortiz to miss WCup qualifier at US
Columbus, Oct 12: Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell will miss Wednesday night’s World Cup qualifier against the United States because of a sprained right ankle. Forward José Guillermo Ortiz will not play in the game because of a positive COVID-19 test, the Costa Rican Football Federation said Monday. Christian Bolaños, a 37-year-old winger with Saprissa, replaced Campbell on the roster. Álvaro Saborío, a 39-year-old forward with San Carlos, took Ortiz’s spot. Campbell has 21 goals in 107 international appearances, including a pair in the 4-0 win over the visiting United States in a November 2016 qualifier. (AP)

CONMEBOL boss wants Brazil, Argentina match played out
Asuncion (Paraguay), Oct 12: The president of CONMEBOL wants the suspended World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina to be played out. FIFA has yet to decide what to do with the match. The September 5 match in Sao Paulo was suspended after seven minutes when Brazilian health officials walked onto the pitch to remove four England-based Argentina players who didn’t comply with coronavirus restrictions. They should have been in quarantine. CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez said, “We believe that matches should be decided on the pitch,” in an interview to radio station 970 AM on Monday. He added the fate of the qualifier was not up for his organisation to decide. (AP)
