SHILLONG, Oct 18: Social activists, Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma, have filed an FIR on Monday after being threatened by one person, who identified himself as Nick Nongkhlaw, for reporting a case of an alleged illegal transportation of coal.
“We would like to inform you that we have been informed on October 17 by some concerned public that two coal trucks (AS01 EC 0796 and AS01 GC 5019) are parked in Wahsnait, Laitkor, East Khasi Hills District, and acidic water was dripping from the coal parked in a residential area which would pollute the ground water,” Kharshiing and Sangma stated in the FIR filed by Madanrting Police Station.
The duo stated that they immediately informed the Madanrting Police to verify and the Officer in-Charge (OC) of Madanrting had deputed police personnel to inspect the coal trucks, who found them there.
“We were also informed by the police that the drivers of the two trucks had fled. We had also gone to the place and saw the coal trucks and the acid leakage from the truck and the police told us that they were instructed to guard the coal trucks while waiting for the cranes to pull the trucks,” the two social activists said in a joint statement.
They informed that they had met the OC of Madanrting Police Station later in the evening, while adding that they had been told that the police are still waiting for the cranes to pull the coal trucks to the police station.
However, while they were on their way home, Kharshiing received a call from a person on her mobile number from a person, who identified himself as Nick Nongkhlaw, but since the signal was not clear, the call was disconnected.
According to them, the same person also called Amita Sangma and claimed to have given money to the coal truck owners, while demanding of her to release the truck of his friend.
The caller had started the conversation by saying he knows her son, which was perceived as a threat by Amita Sangma.
Following this, they immediately informed the OC of Madanrting Police Station.
The two activists, however, said that they were informed on Monday that the two trucks have gone missing. On this, they have urged the police to investigate the disappearance of the coal trucks in Wahsnait and a possible involvement of an insider from the police, and to contact the caller to establish an inquiry.
