Mawkyrwat, Oct 21: Three swimmers from South West Khasi Hills district who will be representing Meghalaya at the National Swimming Championship, 2021 to be held in Bengaluru from October 26-29, 2021, have requested the state government to provide a swimming pool to train and prepare for national competitions.
The three swimmers are Khrawkupar Lyngdoh and Pynkhlainbor Wanniang from Mawkyrwat village, along with Baiahunlang Thongni from Umpung village.
Speaking to media persons, Lyngdoh said that the absence of a swimming pool in Mawkyrwat has affected youngsters looking to take up swimming professionally. He said that he, along with other youth from Mawkyrwat area have had to train at Photumnew’s Sala River.
“The presence of this river is a blessing for us as we started swimming here from our childhood. The river has allowed us to practice, train and compete for competitions at the state level. Now that we are representing our state at the national level, we are not able to train regularly in here due to the heavy monsoon. We sincerely request the government to provide us a swimming pool so that we can practice, train and prepare for the nationals,” Lyngdoh said.
President of the South West Khasi Hills Districts Swimming Association, H.S. Diengdoh expressed delight that the youths will be representing Meghalaya and added that if the Association gets its own pool, the district will produce more swimmers.
