India, World Bank sign USD 40 mn health project for Meghalaya
New Delhi, Nov 1: India and World Bank have signed a US$ 40 million health project in Meghalaya, seeking to improve the quality of health services and strengthen the state’s capacity to handle future health emergencies. “All 11 districts of the state will benefit from the project. It will also benefit health sector staff at the primary and secondary levels by strengthening their planning and management capabilities and building their clinical skills. The project will enable women to better utilize healthcare services at the community level,” Union Finance Ministry said in a statement on Monday. The project will help strengthen the effectiveness of Meghalaya’s health insurance program known as the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) which currently covers 56 per cent of the households. With its merger into the national Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna (PMJAY), MHIS now plans to offer a more comprehensive package and cover 100 per cent of the households. “It will include segregation, disinfection, and collection while safeguarding the environment and improving the quality of health service and patient safety,” the official statement said. Rally for ban on trucks’ movement
TURA, Nov 1: A conglomorate of student and social organisations from Garo Hills have announced a public rally in Ampati mini stadium on Wednesday to raise support for the complete ban on boulder trucks passing through the crucial state highway — SH-12 through Ampati and into Dalu export point with Bangladesh. The groups comprising GSU, AHAM, FKJGP, AYC, AYWO, GSMC, AAYS and ADE have written to South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, informing the latter of the holding the public rally. The decision of the NGOs comes in the face of repeated road accidents involving the boulder trucks that have run over pedestrians and commuters on the route leading to deaths. In the last three months, as many as three innocent lives have been lost due to reckless driving by truckers. Last month, a five-year-old school-going boy was crushed to death while last week, an elderly woman, lost both her legs after she was run over by a speeding truck, which was allegedly moving on the wrong side of the road. She later died from excessive bleeding.
