Cybercrime-accused remanded in five-day police custody

TURA, Nov 6: The Nigerian national, identified as Felix, and a Naga woman, who were earlier arrested by a joint team of Delhi Police and East Garo Hills Police from the national capital in connection with a cybercrime case, were on Friday remanded in five-day police custody for further investigation.
East Garo Hills Police have also identified the Naga woman as Khegoli Awomi.
According to East Garo Hills police, preliminary investigation revealed that a number of people from various places in Meghalaya, including Jowai, Tura, Baghmara, Williamnagar, Ri Bhoi and Nongstoin, were duped by the duo. Further investigation revealed that the Nigerian national had many gang members working with him.
“We are continuing with the investigation but so far we have learnt that he has been using his fake Facebook account under the name — Alex Williams/Alex James. He also has a WhatsApp number — 447398279773, which he uses to dupe people by sending fake gifts and parcels,” police informed.
Police have also requested the public to contact the nearest police station(s) if they have been cheated through his fake accounts.
