SHILLONG, Nov 16: Principal of Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, Group Captain Jai Kishan, has been conferred with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award under the lifetime achievement category by President Ram Nath Kovind recently.
It may be mentioned that the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award is the highest national recognition for outstanding achievements in the field of adventure on land, sea and air.
According to a statement, this is for the first time that an armed forces officer has bagged the award for the second time.
“In 2010, he received the award for Aero Sports Category for setting a World Record for undertaking Skydiving Jump over the base of Mt. Everest. This year, he has been recognised for his lifetime contribution for supporting the youth to pursue adventure sports,” the statement said.
Posted as Principal of Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Darjeeling, the IAF officer holds six World Records, one Asian Record and six National Records in the field of Adventure Sports. In the last 20 years, he has also undertaken more than 2,000 parachute jumps in India and abroad.
“He has also trained more than 20,000 Para jumpers, organised more than 80,000 jumps for Special forces, led IAF skydiving teams, climbed various mountains in India and abroad, and trained more than 3,000 mountaineers and adventure enthusiasts,” the statement said.
