Lahiri misses cut at RSM Classic
St. Simons Island (Georgia), Nov 20: ndian golfer Anirban Lahiri missed the cut at the RSM Classic, his last PGA Tour event of the year, after enduring a nightmarish back nine in the second round of tournament. Lahiri, who shot 4-under 68 in the first round, was 2-under for the front nine and stayed there till the 11th. Over the last seven holes he dropped three bogeys and a double bogey for a round of 73 and missed the weekend action. Meanwhile, Talor Gooch handled the strong wind off the Atlantic Ocean and shot 5-under 65 over the exposed Seaside course. He took a one-shot lead. (PTI)
Werder Bremen coach quits
BREMEN, Nov 20: Werder Bremen coach Markus Anfang and his assistant quit the club on Saturday over investigations into whether they used fake certificates of vaccination against the coronavirus.Bremen managing director Frank Baumann said Anfang and Florian Junge “are taking responsibility and are helping to end the unrest that has arisen around the club and the team in the past few days.” (AP)
Uruguay fire coach Tabárez
Montevideo (Uruguay), Nov 20: Uruguay coach Óscar Tabárez was fired amid his team’s poor run in World Cup qualifying. The Uruguayans are in seventh place in the 10-team South American qualifying group. They have four matches remaining to reach next year’s World Cup in Qatar. The 74-year-old Tabárez coached Uruguay for 15 years in his second stint in the job, including at the last three World Cups. He led Uruguay to a fourth-place finish at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. He has also won the 2011 Copa America. Tabárez also coached Uruguay from 1988-90. (AP)
Charity match to ‘kick’ exclusion
ROME, Nov 20: Pope Francis is hoping that a charity soccer match that includes Swiss Guards, Vatican employees, priests, a player with Down syndrome, migrants and members of the Roma community will deal a significant “kick” to discrimination. The match takes place on Sunday in Rome and will be refereed by Lazio team captain Ciro Immobile. The encounter on the pitch aims to raise funds for a Rome diocese initiative to promote inclusion of Roma and others considered in the Vatican’s description as among society’s “most fragile” members.
