SHILLONG, Dec 20: The state government is under increasing pressure to re-examine its recent notification barring teachers from taking part in active politics.
Academician turned United Democratic Party general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Monday said the government should re-examine the notification.
“The government should clarify the category of teachers. If other categories of people can take part directly or indirectly in politics and local bodies, why not teachers?” he asked.
Mawthoh said academicians such as former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Union minister MMJoshi have been in active politics. Meghalaya has professors RS Lyngdoh, GG Swell, PG Marbaniang, Barrister Pakem, RC Laloo and SL Marbaniang as examples, he added.
The government’s move had earlier been criticised by teachers and leaders of various parties. But Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the government has no immediate plan to either change or withdraw the notification.
