SHILLONG, Dec 22: The construction of the much-awaited Meghalaya Engineering College is likely to be completed by March next year.
Located at Mawlai, the existing polytechnic is being remodeled to meet the requirements of a full-fledged engineering college.
The state government has sanctioned a total amount of Rs 21 crore for this project.
A senior official of the PWD (Building) informed The Shillong Times that the physical progress of the project is 90%.
“The physical progress of the project in March this year was only 40%. We have managed to speed up the work despite the COVID-19 pandemic during the past eight months. This was possible due to the joint efforts of the officials led by Additional Chief Secretary, DP Wahlang and the contractor who was awarded the work,” the official said.
Informing that they had targeted to finish the work before Meghalaya marks 50 years of Statehood, he however said that they could not complete the project due to the shortage of the labour force.
According to the official, all the 120 labourers engaged in the construction of the engineering college were locals. “Even the specialised work like tiling, ceiling and aluminum fittings are being done by the local labourers,” he said.
Additional Chief Secretary, Education, DP Wahlang said the faculty will be recruited by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission on completion of the infrastructure.
With the completion of the project the much awaited state engineering college will finally take shape.
