Death anniv of U Kiang Nangbah
SHILLONG, Dec 23: To remember the Khasi freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah on his death anniversary, a programme will be held at Sein Raij Dorbar Hall, Qualapatty from 3 pm on December 30. The programme which will be organised by Seinlang Sein Raij Niamtre, Shillong will have MP, Vincent H Pala as its chief guest. In the event, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo will deliver a talk on the topic “Need to remember our fundamental duties as we remember our great patriot”.

College observes Mathematics Day
SHILLONG, Dec 23: The Shillong College in collaboration with the State Council of Science, Technology and Environment, Meghalaya celebrated the National Mathematics Day on Wednesday. The celebration, first of all, included a lecture on the life and works of Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan by Head of Department, Mathematics, Shillong College, D Shadap. An exhibition cum competition of origami and mathematical models, an open maths quiz competition and a valedictory function were also organised as part of the programme. Maths ambassadors and students of the department actively participated in the events as the chief guest of the valedictory function, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Dr. Joram Beda IAS gave an inspiring speech to the young participants in attendance. Awards were also presented to the winners of the exhibition and quiz competition. Notably, the National Mathematics Day has been celebrated in all the districts of Meghalaya throughout the months of November and December and different state-level workshops were also conducted for upper primary mathematics teachers as part of these celebrations. Earlier in November, Shillong College had also organised a two-day “Workshop on Mathematics through Origami” where Resource Person of National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Department of Science and Technology, VVS Shastry presided over as the main resource person. The celebration was organised under the aegis of NCSTC, DST, Government of India.

Raid against illicit liquor
SHILLONG, Dec 23: As part of the drive against illicit liquor, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner (Excise), East Khasi Hills District has been conducting several raids in the restaurants and stalls of the town and its outskirts. During the month of November, the Excise staff detected 10 cases involving a seizure of 11.750 litres of i/d liquor and 3.260 litres of IMFL. As of now, the cases are under investigation/prosecution and as many as 10 people have been arrested under Excise Act.
