SHILLONG, Jan 5: A team of experts from New Delhi have arrived in the state to examine the cracks which appeared on the crucial Sonapur bridge in East Jaintia Hills which connects Meghalaya with Cachar district of Assam and other Northeastern states like Agartala and Manipur.
Informing this, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, said that he has asked the project director of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to collect all the information and take immediate action.
The bridge was built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), as per reports.
Stating that signs of cracks are apparent on the bridge, Tynsong said that the team of experts from Delhi is on the way to the bridge to examine the situation.
He also informed that the district administration of East Jaintia Hills has already imposed restrictions on plying on the bridge.
The Sonapur bridge is the second bridge in Meghalaya to have developed cracks in the last few years after just a couple of years ago, the all-important Dwar-Ksuid bridge had developed cracks and till date, a bailey bridge is being used for movement of vehicles along the Shillong Bypass.
Recently, the construction of a new bridge on the route was sanctioned and the construction work is expected to begin this month itself.
