SHILLONG, Jan 8: As Shillong and East Khasi Hills as a whole continue to witness a spike in COVID-19 cases, the district administration of East Khasi Hills has imposed stricter restrictions to slow down the spread of the virus and to prevent a possible uncontrollable surge of infections.
According to an order issued on Saturday, all shops in Shillong Urban Agglomeration have been directed to close by 8 PM, whereas restaurants and eateries have to close by 9 PM sharp.
This latest order of the administration also states that “shops and vendors will remain closed on Sundays”. It, however, mentioned that bars and wine shops will be regulated through a separate order, which had not been issued at the time of filing of this report.
Reacting on the COVID-19-related developments, Mawlai MLA PT Sawkmie stated that lockdown should be avoided and even closure of shops, markets and public transport should be avoided.
Stating that the ongoing fight against COVID-19 has taught many things in the last two years, Sawkmie added that he wants the Meghalaya government to adopt the best approach and strategy which will not affect the state’s economy and people’s livelihood too.
