US varsity confers honorary doctorate upon Tura poet

Tura, Jan 11: In what will go down as a major achievement, renowned poet from Tura, Biswajit Nandi, has been conferred an honorary doctorate from the California Public University (CPU), one of the leading educational institutions in the United States of America.
Nandi is well known, not only in Meghalaya but across the country for his contributions to literature, be it through poetry or stories.
He was awarded for his extensive role in the field of poetry writing and social activities and service that he has rendered to society. The Honoris Casua D.Litt comprised a certificate, plaque and a medal.
The University awards honorary doctorate in Literature to eminent personalities from various walks of life. Other fields of recognition also include science & technologies, literature, poetry and social services.
Nandi’s name was recommended to the CPU by India’s one of the renowned research organization DK International Research Foundation (DKIRF).
“It is indeed a proud moment for me to receive the Honoris Causa D Litt from CPU and is recognition for all who are working in the field of literature,” said Nandi on being conferred the doctorate.
He expressed gratitude for being conferred with the award as a poet at a time when India is celebrating 75 years of independence through programs like the ‘Azadi ka Mohotsav’.
“My state, Meghalaya, is also celebrating its 50th year of statehood,” he said, adding that he felt the honour was a double blast for country and state. Further he thanked the DKIRF chairman and the International Convocation Committee for selecting him. The dignitaries present during the function included Dr Krishantha Pathiraja, Chairman, Government of Sri Lanka, Dr Regunath Parakkal, President International Human rights, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Dr R Sivaraman, expert member centre for research & accreditation commission, Melbourne, Prof Dr Mahua Das, Vice Chancellor of West Bengal State University, Kolkata, Dr M Suresh Kumar, executive director, DKIRF and other officials.
