MAWKYRWAT, Jan 25: The United Democratic Party (UDP), on Tuesday, announced that the party will enter the fray for Mawkyrwat seat in the 2023 Assembly elections.
Speaking at a meeting here to confirm the party’s office-bearers for the term 2020-2023, president of the UDP South West Khasi Hills District, Pius Marwein, stated that the party’s presence in Mawkyrwat constituency is growing stronger as leaders from different areas have joined the party and the setting up of primary units across the constituency.
“However, we need candidate to take the party forward because the leaders and office-bearers alone cannot strengthen the party,” hesaid.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Marwein said that the UDP is well-prepared and will contest the 2023 elections from Mawkyrwat constituency, even as he exuded confidence that the party will win the election this time in the constituency.
Speaking on the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) in the state, which is an alliance of the UDP and HSPDP, Marwein said, “Till date, we are still working together within the state, but at the constituency-level, we are clear that we will go our separate ways and especially for Mawkyrwat Constituency the party is well-prepared and is clear that we will contest the 2023 election”.
Marwein, however, did not reveal the name of the candidate that the UDP will put up in the upcoming election for Mawkyrwat seat. He stated that it depends on the party’s concerned circle to choose the candidate.
The new office-bearers include Shainkor Nongsiej (president), KD Wanniang (general secretary) among others. Also present included UDP leader and Cabinet Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, and other leaders.
