TURA, Jan 28: The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Central Executive Body on Friday raised the issue of the setting up of the Winter Assembly and an Additional Secretariat in Tura saying it was in the agreement when the state was first carved out 50 years ago.

“We would like to see the present government realizing the agreement of 50 years ago where the state government functions for six months from Tura and the remaining six months from Shillong,” its President Georgeprice Ch Momin said in a statement.

Momin informed that to pursue the issue, AHAM would be organizing a signature campaign in Tura very soon including rallies and agitations in the coming days.

Meanwhile, former Secretary of the AYWO Lyiend Roshan Marak, in a separate release called for changes to be made to the Job Reservation policy and suggested that the quota for the Garos should be slightly increased.

“The quota now stands at 40% each for Garos and Khasi-Jaintias. But the population of Garos has increased manifold and many who are Graduates are unable to find jobs,” Marak said.

Marak attributed the problem to the lack of big industries, schools and government offices and their branches in Garo Hills as compared to the state Capital Shillong, and suggested that increasing the quota for Garos to 50% would go a long way to solve the unemployment problem.
