SHILLONG, Jan 28: Meghalaya will on Sunday join other states and union territories to observe a two-minute silence in memory of those who have laid down their lives during India’s struggle for freedom.
It may be mentioned that only recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs had asked the states and union territories to ensure strict observance of a two-minute silence at 11 am every year on January 30 — Martyrs’ Day — to commemorate the freedom fighters.
With this, the Meghalaya Government has informed that silence should be observed while work and movement should be stopped for two minutes throughout the state at 11 am on Sunday.  “Wherever feasible, the commencement and termination of the two minutes silence period should be indicated by sound of siren or Army guns. Sirens should be sounded from 10:59 hours till 11:00 hours and after two minutes, all clear sirens should again be sounded from 11:02 hours till 11:03 hours. This procedure may be adopted where sirens exist,” a statement in this regard said.
Asking one and all to stand up and observe the silence on hearing the signals, it added, “The All India Radio should stop broadcasting and traffic on the road should come to a standstill for two minutes.”
