SHILLONG, Jan 30: Congress leader Ampareen Lyngdoh said she foresees status quo in the Harijan Colony issue, stating that no court of law will be a silent spectator to violation of human rights.
“I foresee a status quo in this issue. I don’t see a permanent solution,” she told reporters on Sunday.
Making it clear that she does not want to take sides, she said, “We have our own stand and emotion on this issue but I can assure that no court of law will be a silent spectator when there is going to be a violation of rights of any individual sitting on either side of the fence.”
“We attempted in the past but there has always been this pillar – the judiciary which stepped in to bring sanity and understanding on the matter,” Lyngdoh added.
She said solution will not be easy but it is achievable.
Stating that she has no idea what the government has in its mind to solve the issue, she said, “I am not privy to information. I do not know the committee’s recommendations, as the document has not been made public.”
“We cannot presume and assume but if the area needs redevelopment, we should take on board all concerned. There is no point in conflict,” she added. (Contd on P-4)

(Contd from P-1) She hoped the government will be able to handle the situation delicately without condemning anyone or taking sides. She stressed on dialogues involving communities. She said it will be disastrous to not involve communities.
“Does Meghalaya want to see a communal clash before the 2023 elections?” she cautioned.
Stating that this is about the lives of people living in that colony, Lyngdoh said although the Congress is not at the helm of affairs where it can take decisions, yet it can give advice to the government for the good of people and Shillong.
“We redeveloped so many places of such nature in the past. So, why can’t we redevelop it now? However, we need an approach that is ideal and can yield better results,” she added.
