Guwahati, Feb 1: In a major breakthrough, Assam Police seized heroin worth about Rs 36-crore from a truck from an area under Basistha police station here and arrested two persons belonging to Manipur on Monday night.
Acting on a tip-off, a Guwahati city police team, led by joint commissioner of police (Guwahati), Partha Sarathi Mahanta, launched the late-night operation and seized 4.5 kilograms of heroin after intercepting the truck on NH-37 here.
“The value of the seized drugs will be between Rs 31.5 crore and Rs 36 crore in the international market. Two persons, Md Idomi and Md Nawaz Khan from Thoubal district of Manipur, have been arrested in connection with the case. The truck and a mobile phone have also been seized,” Mahanta informed mediapersons on Tuesday.
The arrested persons were occupants of the truck and it is suspected that the banned substances were ferried from Myanmar through Manipur.
A case (Basistha PS case number 151/2022 under Sections 21 C/24/29 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered.
“Follow-up action in regard to the case is going on and further investigation underway,” the joint commissioner of police said.
Police had to use gas cutters to break open the concealed compartment inside the bumper of the truck.
