NEW DELHI, Feb 7: Lok Sabha member from Tura, Agatha Sangma urged the Centre to introduce all courses of humanities and sciences in the Tura campus of the North-Eastern Hill University for the benefit of scores of tribal students from remote corner of the state who are, otherwise, deprived of higher education.
In a letter to Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, the NPP MP said the Tura campus of NEHU has only 10 centrally-approved educational departments while the number of students seeking higher education has increased by leaps and bounds over the years.
Non availability of all arts and science courses has turned into a problem for students coming from poor backgrounds and the remote corners of Garo Hills, she said.
Agatha also raised concern over the vacancies in the NEHU Tura campus. The campus lacks basic amenities like hostel, auditorium and a full-fledged medical unit, she said, while urging the Centre to provide adequate funds to the University.
She demanded that all the vacant posts in teaching and non teaching faculties should be filled up without any delay. She also demanded setting up of a Kendriya Vidyalaya on the NEHU Tura campus.
