NONGSTOIN, Feb 11: The Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), West Khasi Hills, has alleged that a delegation of student organisations, government officials and police personnel from Assam had recently visited Malangkona as part of an “inspection” and made attempts to mislead the locals there.
Calling on the West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner in-charge PD Sangma over the issue, FKJGP president C Nongdkhar said that at a time when collective efforts are being made by the governments of Meghalaya and Assam to resolve the decades-old border dispute, the delegation from Assam visited Aradonga to take stock of the situation there. However, according to the FKJGP, the delegation left without creating nuisance.
According to the FKJGP, it was later on the same day that the delegation paid visit to Malangkona and reportedly misled the locals, precipitating a clash.
“We are shocked to see the Assam police patrolling the Malang area which falls under the jurisdiction of the state of Meghalaya,” Nongkhar said.
Therefore, based on the above issues, the FKJGP seeks the intervention of the DC into the issue and also urges the regional committee on border dispute to take up this matter seriously, he added.
Meanwhile, the GSU Aradonga Unit has called for deployment of more police personnel in border outposts.
