SHILLONG, Feb 11: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Thursday shortlisted three names for the post of Director General of Police (DGP), excluding acting DGP Idashisha Nongrang from the list.
An official source said that the list was forwarded to the state government on Friday. The UPSC shortlisted the names of Mukesh Agrawal, KV Singh Deo (both 1989 batch) and L Ram Bishnoi (1991 batch) for the DGP’s post.
All three IPS officers are from the Assam-Meghalaya joint cadre but have no experience of working in Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya government had forwarded five names to the UPSC for consideration. Apart from Agarwal, Deo and Bishnoi, the other two candidates were S Narayan Singh (1991) and Nongrang (1992).
The state government was keen to appoint Nongrang as the first woman DGP of Meghalaya.
According to an official source, most of the senior police officials are disappointed over Nongrang’s exclusion from the list finalised by UPSC.
The new DGP will succeed R Chandranathan who retired on December 31, 2021 and has since been appointed as security adviser to the state government.
