SHILLONG, Feb 24: Chief Secretary RV Suchiang on Thursday said she will discuss with the police the matter of maintaining CCTV cameras in the city in view of two instances of IED blasts, looting of petrol pumps by armed miscreants and several cases of assault.
She said the recent sporadic incidents are not law-and-order problems with FIRs filed and steps taken.
Suchiang also said the installation of CCTV cameras in the city is not a problem but its maintenance is a challenge and the government will take care of the maintenance issues in different parts of the city.
“I will talk to the police and see what can be done,” she said, adding that installation of the CCTV camera in the city is a one-time expenditure.
The importance of functional CCTV cameras had been felt in the last eight-nine months following the IED blasts in the city – one at Laitumkhrah market on August 10 last last year and the other at Police Bazar on January 30.
The looting of a petrol pump and assaults on people in specific areas of the city followed.
The CCTV cameras were installed in 30 locations of the city some time ago, but many are not functioning.
