SHILLONG, March 8: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Tuesday rejected the Meghalaya Agricultural Land (Regulation) Bill, 2022, which KHNAM MLA Adelbert Nongrum had sought to introduce in the House.
The draft of the Bill proposed that agricultural land in the state should not be used for non-agricultural purpose and no construction of buildings, permanent dwellings, recreational institutions, industrial or commercial activity shall be permitted on agricultural land.
As per Nongrum, the objective of the Bill was to preserve the limited arable land resources available in the state and to protect the livelihood of farmers who depend on agriculture as their primary occupation.
