Mining and transportation of coal banned in West Jaintia Hills

JOWAI, March 17: Pursuant to the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the directives issued by Chief Secretary, RV Suchiang, the district magistrate of West Jaintia Hills has issued an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting illegal mining and transportation of coal along the state and national highways in the district with immediate effect.
The order also bans ferrying of coal from mines or jungles to the coal depot or the stockyard.
The district magistrate also said that mine owners, labourers, truck owners and drivers found violating the order would face stern action as per provisions of the law.
