NONGSTOIN, March 21: The Eastern West Khasi Hills District Magistrate has prohibited the use of chemicals in river Khri and its nearby streams, and, at the same time, also prohibited burning of forests and grasslands in and around the villages falling under Ri-men area to prevent damage to aquatic lives and ensure the safety of general public.
The directives come in the wake of complaints against use of poisonous chemical substances to catch fish from Khri and its nearby feeder streams, and complaints against burning of forests and grasslands during dry seasons in the Ri-men.
The District Magistrate has also warned that violation of the order will entail stringent action.
