NONGPOH, April 2: An altercation broke out in Jatalong village falling under Block-II, Ri-Bhoi, after two persons were allegedly beaten up in an incident, which was the result of a misunderstanding.
The incident has even evoked criticism from leaders of various pressure groups in the state.
However, Ri-Bhoi Additional Deputy Commissioner, MB Tongper, has ruled out any communal angle in the case and termed the incident a result of misunderstanding while the duo and one more individual were purchasing liquor on Friday night.
The DC has stated that the Assam and Meghalaya Police are on the hunt to nab the ‘illegal’ liquor seller, while adding that a case in this regard has also been registered.
MHRC moved
Meanwhile, a social activist, Joannes JTL Lamare, has written to the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) seeking the latter’s intervention in the assault case. Lamare said that actions of the alleged assailants are recognised as violation of human rights, which need to be addressed at the earliest.
