SHILLONG, April 3: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Sunday asserted that All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) posed no threat to either the former or any other political party in the state.
“I do not know about Garo Hills but there are no takers for AITC in Khasi-Jaintia Hills for sure. That means they are not a threat in any way to our party or any other party,” UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said.
“It is a new party here. Although it has significant presence in West Bengal, it will face an uphill task to win people’s support in Meghalaya,” he added.
Reacting to AITC MP Shanta Chhetri’s demand in the Rajya Sabha for minority status to Hindus in Meghalaya, Mawthoh said, “Anybody can say anything and whatever they like.”
“The Khasis, Jaintias and Garos are a minuscule minority in the context of the nation,” he pointed out, adding that the Centre should give special protection and consideration to all the ethnic communities and promote their language, culture, tradition and way of life.
