SHILLONG, April 29: The state government will seek a report from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on the issue of illegal toll gates which the Council said was necessary for revenue generation.
“I will ask for a report. I have not updated myself on the ground situation and I cannot reply until and unless I get a full report,” District Council Affairs Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui said on Friday.
Reacting to the KHADC’s stand that the state government should allow the Council and the Himas to continue to collect their taxes, he said, “There is the issue of constraint and the government needs to see whether that constraint is legally permissible or not.”
Recently, MCTO&DA president Moskalander Marngar said the KHADC and the Himas were extorting truckers by putting up over 30 illegal toll gates in the Khasi Hills region.
Marngar had alleged the truckers are forced to pay Rs 18,000-20,000 while plying through the illegal toll gates and in some cases they have been assaulted for not paying up.
