Camp for spine consultation at city hospital

SHILLONG, May 2: A spine consultation camp is going to get under way from May 2 to 7 for persons experiencing symptoms of spinal disorder which will be organised by the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (MIOT) International, Chennai, in association with Bethany Hospital, Shillong.
Talking to reporters, Bethany Hospital spokesperson, Dr Kyntiewlang Sanmiet, said that statistics say every nine out of 10 individuals between the age group of 18 years and above are suffering from back pain. According to him, as per study, 95 per cent of the population might be affected by back pain.
Stating that the hospital has encountered several patients who are suffering from spinal disorders, Sanmiet said that they wanted to consult a spine specialist to treat their back problem.
Bethany Hospital spokesperson said that the hospital decided to collaborate with MIOT International since it is one of the best hospitals in the country specialising in orthopaedic care.
Informing that there is no official data on people suffering from spinal issues, he said that around 50-60 patients visit the hospitals with complaints of spinal problem.
Sanmiet said that the hospitals will continue to hold similar camps in the future.
Meanwhile, MIOT spine specialist Sashikant Pophale said that this is the first collaboration between the two hospitals. He further said that they will be treating the patients who require surgery in Bethany Hospital itself.
He said they are trying to dispel myths about spine surgery that patients are unable to work, and others.
