SHILLONG, May 3: Heaps of garbage dumped in Iawmusiang in West Jaintia Hills continues to spell all kinds of trouble for residents and despite repeated clamour for a solution to the “grim situation”, it persists.
However, Dorbar Shnong of Tympang-Iawmusiang has now sought the intervention of Chief Secretary Rebecca Suchiang in the matter seeking disposal of the garbage accumulating at Iawmusiang.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary, the Waheh Chnong (village head) of Dorbar Shnong Tympang-Iawmusiang, Ajoy Lywait, stated that the chief secretary must be aware that people of Jowai, particularly residents of Iawmusiang locality, have been facing serious problems due to the failure of the Jowai Municipal Board to collect the garbage from all localities including the market areas.
“As a result of this, a lot of garbage has piled up at three locations within our locality. Similar situation has been created at one location at Ladthalaboh lawthymme. This garbage problem has been there since the last four months,” he said.
Lywait added, “We need not elaborate the situation that has been created as we believe that you are already aware of the grim situation as the matter had been highlighted in the print and electronic media on several occasions”.
The Waheh Chnong lamented that the government machineries in the Urban Affairs department have the “courage” to make a mockery of the High Court citing the hearing of a PIL in this regard on April 22, when they made a tall claim that the garbage was cleared but in reality the situation remains the same.
“We urge you to issue necessary order to direct the district administration and the Jowai Municipal Board to dispose of the garbage in the dumping site at Myngkjai, the site which has been used for the purpose since the last 40 years, which belongs to the District Council, and which has zero effect on the health of the people since then,” the village head said.
