Quiz competitions organised in Jowai, Nongstoin
JOWAI/NONGSTOIN, May 4: Quiz competitions were organised on Wednesday in Jowai and Nongstoin as part of the North East Festival and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. In Jowai, the competition was organised at the interschool level by the Office of the District School Education Officer in collaboration with the Office of the Planning Officer in Jowai. A total of seven schools participated in the competition. Government Boys Higher Secondary School bagged the first prize, Government Girls Higher Secondary School secured the second prize and North Liberty Higher Secondary School bagged the third prize. In Nongstoin, a similar programme was organised at the district level by the Office of the District School Education Officer in collaboration with the District Planning Office. The competition was held at Anderson Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin, in which ten higher secondary schools of the district participated. Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Joint Director School Education and Literacy, West Khasi Hills, R Khongwang said that the programme was organised as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. St Peters higher secondary School, Pyndengrei bagged the first place in the competition, while Anderson Higher Secondary School and Joel Gatphoh Memorial Synod Higher Secondary School, Kynroh, secured second and third places respectively.

Campaign against single-use plastics
Shillong, May 4: The sixth semester students of Mass Media department, St Anthony’s College, Shillong spearheaded a communication campaign titled ‘SAC Against SUP Bottles’ which focused on the menace of single-use plastic bottles among college students, particularly students of St Anthony’s College. According to a statement, the campaign was launched on the April 25 and ended on May 4. “Single-use plastics are the main cause of plastic pollution worldwide. According to a recent study, 368 million tons of plastic is produced every year around the world. The campaign aimed to address such concerns and focused on the menace of single-use plastic bottles in the campus,” the statement said. To mark the culmination of the campaign, the students also organised a talk titled ‘Waste to Grace’ and a panel discussion on the theme ‘Single-use plastic water bottles: An absolute monstrosity’ on Wednesday. Besides the talk and the panel discussion, the campaign also included a flash mob, skit, signature campaign and a photo booth.

Drawing and essay writing competition held in city
SHILLONG, May 4: The final round of the drawing and essay writing competition, organised by the DoNER Ministry in collaboration with the State Council of Science, Technology & Environment and Shillong College, was held on Wednesday at Shillong College Conference Hall. According to a statement, the competition was organised as part of celebrations of India’s 75th year of Independence and the Meghalaya 50th year of statehood. In the essay writing competition, the first place was bagged by Donesa S Marak of Don Bosco Hr Sec School, Baghmara, the second place was awarded to Valareene Moksha from Mawlai Nongpdeng and the third place was bagged by Nevermind Pohduna of Holy Cross Hr Sec School. In the drawing competition, the first prize was awarded to Banlamshwa War of St Dominic Savio’s Hr Sec School, second prize to Iafibakor K Tariang of Synod Higher Sec School and the third prize was awarded to Biachi Cheara Om Sangma. Ten consolation prizes were also awarded in each category.

Awareness on CUET in Sohra
SHILLONG, May 4: At a time when bewilderment looms large among the student fraternity in Meghalaya over the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), students of class XII and sixth semester from institutes in Sohra and Pynursla civil subdivisions were counselled on the all-India test during a workshop organised by the Sohra Government College on Wednesday. According to a statement, a total of 320 students participated in the workshop. Speaking during the inauguration of the programme, Principal of Sohra Government College Dr AL Lyngdoh, said that the workshop was an outcome of the meeting of principals with the Vice Chancellor of NEHU on April 22 and was organised in accordance with the direction from the Directorate of School Education & Literacy and the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education, with an aim to familiarise students on the various aspect of CUET. The workshop included detailed discussions on the registration process, conduct of the test and pattern of the exam. A question-and-answer session was also organised for the students as part of the workshop.
