TURA, May 4: Various NGOs from the areas of Chibinang, Bikkongre and Phulbari in West Garo Hills have sought action against three people for allegedly leading an assault on the visitors at Chibinang market last Sunday afternoon.
In their complaint to the WGH Superintendant of Police Vivekananda Singh, the NGOs said that the attack was unprovoked and those who were assaulted were not even involved in a minor altercation that took place earlier.
“At least three persons were beaten up by a mob from which the victims were able to identify at least three of the main persons who led the attack. As per one of the victims, he was attacked while standing in front of a shop without any warning. They were attacked with weapons and it’s a miracle that no one died in the violence,” said the NGOs.
According to the complainants, the three prime accused had initially gotten into an argument over a minor accident.
Although the matter was amicably resolved, the trio, after the resolution, reportedly began targeting passersby.
The victims, who have also filed a complaint in this regard, are alleging police inaction.
Confirming the receipt of the complaint, the SP said that a case has been registered and investigation into the same is under way.
“The situation currently is normal and we have held community meetings to pacify sentiments immediately after the incident,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NGOs, in a statement, have not only called for action against the perpetrators but are also accusing the police of downplaying the incident.
“Those mentioned in the FIR need to face the full brunt of the law to ease tensions that flared up after the incident so that a repeat does not take place. It’s strange that the police are choosing to downplay the incident despite the enormity of what has taken place,” they said.
A meeting to condemn the incident and seek action against the culprits was also convened on Tuesday, which was attended by locals leaders, Nokmas, members of various NGOs, et al.
