SHILLONG, May 9: Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s songs, poems, dance, etc. were among the few highlights that added colour to a programme, which was organised to commemorate the 161st birth anniversary of Tagore, at Women’s College on Monday.
According to a statement, the programme was attended by former MLA Manas Chaudhuri as the chief guest, cultural artist Silbi Passah as the special guest, college principal Dr Ratnadeep Roy, vice principal Dr Mayashree Das, faculty members and students.
During the programme, Tagore’s poetry was recited, and songs and dance were performed in Khasi, Bengali and English languages by the teachers and students of the college.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Chaudhuri spoke about the relationship between Tagore and nature.
He also informed that it was Tagore’s love for nature that inspired him to establish the Visva Bharati University in Bolpur, 40 kms away from Calcutta, so that people could get educated in the midst of nature.
“Tagore wrote several volumes of songs, poems and novels as well, expressing his love for nature. This concern of the poet is still the need of the hour even today to look after our environment and we all must play a role in the preservation of our environment,” he said.
Passah, on the other hand, spoke about Tagore’s visit to Shillong and the poems that he penned during his stay.
