SHILLONG, May 10: Currently in India to partake in the events as part of “Swarnim Vijay Varsh” celebrations, a 25-member delegation of Bangladesh Mukti Jodhas (freedom fighters) on Tuesday visited the Eastern Air Command (EAC), Upper Shillong.
The Swarnim Vijay Varsh celebrations is being organised to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Liberation War.
Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO), Air Marshal AP Singh, AVSM, interacted with the Mukti Jodhas and praised their role and efforts in the 1971 war.
The 25 Bangladeshis Mukti Joddhas were involved in the operation in 1971 from the Meghalaya Sector.
Commissioner & Secretary for Arts & Culture department, Frederick Roy Kharkongor, who accompanied the delegation, thanked the EAC for organising a befitting function, while adding that some members of the delegation were emotional during the function as they relived their memories of the war.
Speaking on behalf of the Mukti Jodhas, Haroon Habib paid homage to the heroic members of the Indian Armed Forces who fought for the liberation of Bangladesh and said that their contributions will remain enshrined in Bangladesh’s independence history. The delegation will also call on Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Chief Secretary Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang on Thursday after their visit to Tamabil, the trading point between India-Bangladesh in West Jaintia Hills district and tourist spots.
They will also interact with Border Security Force officials.
Earlier, the delegation had visited Mawphlang Sacred Grove in a bid to experience the ecological heritage of the Khasis.
The Mukti Jodhas were accorded a warm welcome at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong, by FR Khankongor and KL Nongbri, Joint Secretary, Arts & Culture department.
