SHILLONG, May 10: NPP state president, WR Kharlukhi’s strong criticism of the previous government on the interstate boundary dispute has ruffled the feathers of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president, PN Syiem, who has held Kharlukhi wrong for reportedly saying that the previous government had failed to take steps to resolve the long-pending issue.
The MPCC working president, on Tuesday, said that the state government in the past did not want to go ahead with solving the boundary issue by giving away the land belonging to the Himas to Assam.
According to him, if the previous government was ready to give away the land to Assam, then they would have been able to make tall claims about resolving the interstate boundary dispute.
“But the NPP-led MDA seems to be in a rush to resolve the boundary issue by surrendering our land to Assam. The solution to the boundary issue should be acceptable to everyone,” Syiem said.
He said that it is not right on part of the government to give away the land without the consent of the Himas like Hima Nonglang, Hima Nongspung, Hima Mylliem, Hima Jyrngam and Hima Riangsih.
“The opposition to the boundary agreement only proves that many are not happy,” Syiem said.
Meanwhile, Syiem said that the statement of Kharlukhi that the MDA government will not reconsider the MoU is nothing new.
“We are contemplating to move a petition in the court to oppose the MoU since we know that the government is firm on its decision,” the MPCC working president said.
It may be recalled that the NPP state president had, on Monday, said there would be no reconsideration of the MoU.
Kharlukhi recalled that the issue was hanging fire for 50 years and all efforts made by the previous government resulted in the status quo.
