BAGHMARA, May 15: Almost completely in disarray after a cyclonic storm hit the town of Baghmara, one of the oldest schools in the state, the Baghmara Government Higher Secondary School is set to get a facelift after an amount of Rs 4 crore was assured by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for the creation of a new building.
The roof and major portions of the school infrastructure suffered major damage in the cyclonic storm on April 30 this year leaving students precariously placed in terms of their education.
The structure had already been in tatters before the storm added to the woes of the educators and students.
The school in question caters to hundreds of students from the town of Baghmara and its adjoining areas.
Following the destruction of the school, appeals were made to all to help in getting the infrastructure back on track and donations were sought to renovate the school in its current state for the sake of the children and their future.
Pictures of the school in its current state had flooded social media with appeals being made by residents to help build the school infrastructure.
Taking the situation into account, Rongara-Siju MLA, Rakkam Sangma, had appealed to the CM for funds for the school. “Currently the teachers are collecting donations to repair the school on their own. There needed to be a long-term solution so I asked the CM to look into the matter and help. He has decided to do so,” said Rakkam.
The MLA stated that an amount of Rs 4 crore has been promised by the CM for the creation of a new building and related infrastructure for the school.
“We expect the approval in the coming session and work should be started in the coming 2-3 months. We hope this will go a long way in improving the education scene in the town and the district,” added Rakkam.
