SHILLONG, May 16: Social activist Angela Rangad on Monday approached the Meghalaya Lokayukta chairperson for information on the assets of public servants, their spouses and dependent children as mandated by law from the time of the operationalisation of the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2014.
In her petition, she sought information regarding the assets declared annually by the public servants as mandated by the Act.
Rangad, also a member of Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) told reporters after submitting her application under the RTI that Section 45 of the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act clearly says the public servants need to declare their assets annually.
The IAS officers have to go through the Department of Personnel and Training to declare the assets, she said.
She also said the declaration of assets would help know if some public servants in the state have disproportionate wealth.
“A public servant shall, within a period of 30 days from the date on which he makes and subscribes an oath or affirmation to enter upon his office, furnish to the competent authority the information relating to the assets of which he, his spouse and his dependent children are, jointly or severally, owners or beneficiaries,” Rangad said, citing a relevant section of the Lokayukta Act.
According to her, a sub-section requires every public servant to file with the competent authority an annual return of such assets and liabilities on or before July 31 every year.
