Union minister to inaugurate service centre for PwDs today

SHILLONG, May 16: Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar will virtually inaugurate the services of the composite regional centre (CRC) for skill development, rehabilitation and empowerment of persons with disabilities (PwDs) on Tuesday.
Union Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, Pratima Bhoumik, Social Welfare Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala and East Shillong MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh, among others will attend the function to be held at Soso Tham auditorium.
Talking to reporters on Monday, Commissioner for PwDs, Sabrella B Marak said inauguration of the CRC will be a milestone for the state.
She said that the state government has provides 10 acres of land at Umsawli in New Shillong Township to the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), Chennai to set up the centre.
NIEPMD Director, Nachiketa Rao said that the centre will provide a number of outreach, capacity building and skill development programmes for PwDs.
The CRC here is the 20th institution of its kind and became functional on July 19, 2021. CRC Shillong provides clinical services to PwDs like special education, physiotherapy, vocational rehabilitation, clinical psychology, orientation and mobility training, occupational therapy, speech & hearing services, prosthetic & orthotic services, sensory integration therapy, guidance & counseling and community-based rehabilitation services.
CRC Shillong also provides aids & appliances to PwDs under ADIP scheme by organising ADIP assessment and distribution camp.
Apart from providing clinical services, this organisation is involved in creating awareness, developing resource materials, conducting outreach programs and implementing schemes of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
