NONGSTOIN, May 29: The Seng Khasi of West Khasi Hills have aired concern after they were disallowed from building a scientific crematorium by the dorbar of Syllei ïawkheiñ village, Nongstoiñ.
President of Seng Khasi, West Khasi Hills, P Ryntathiang, informed that the Seng Khasi of Nongstoin had already planned to build a scientific crematorium and an NOC for the same was also obtained.
It is shocking to learn that after the crematorium was about to be constructed, the same village who had given the NOC has disallowed the project to continue, he said.
Lamenting that the reason for the denial of the nod to construct the crematorium is not clear till date, Ryntathiang said that it was the acting village headman who informed that the NOC, provided to the Seng Khasi by the former headman, has been revoked.
He said that the Seng Khasi of Nongstoiñ had purchased a plot of land in Syllei Iawphein in 2007 and the NOC for the construction of the scientific crematory was obtained in 2019. Following this, in the year 2020-2021, the Seng Khasi also received a scheme of Rs 46 lakh from the government for the construction of scientific crematorium, Ryntathiang added.
However, immediately after the Seng Khasi apprised the village dorbar of the construction work, the latter opposed it.
The Seng Khasi have, meanwhile, urged the village dorbar to recall the decision, arguing that there is no place for them to conduct the last rites.
