TURA, May 29: The Mendipathar College Students’ Union (MCSU) has petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for the appointment of additional teaching staff for the college.
The MCSU on Sunday called on the chief minister and submitted a memorandum.
In its memorandum, the Union said that the college, despite being provided grant-in-aid, has only 12 sanctioned posts of assistant professors, including the principal and vice principal.
The Union said that in order to cope with the yearly enrolment of students, which they said comes to around 18,000, 23 additional assistant professors were appointed under non-sanctioned posts with consolidated pay.
The Union added that some of these staff have been serving for 15-20 years with their services yet to be regularised and the burden of payment of their salaries falls on the college’s limited resources which, according to the MCSU, in turn affects development activities.
Pointing out that rules laid down by the University Grants Commission make it mandatory for a college offering honours courses to have minimum 5 to 6 sanctioned posts in each discipline, the Union said that additional teaching staff, as per college’s requirement, should be appointed.
