SHILLONG, May 31: An RTI finding has revealed that there are 3,367 posts in various government departments yet to be filled up.
RTI activist Disparsing Rani on Tuesday said various departments are yet to inform either the District Selection Committees (DSCs) or the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) to advertise and conduct the interview for more than 3,000 of these vacant posts.
Another 290 posts are lying vacant, documents he received recently through RTI said.
Out of these 290 posts, 19 are in District Forest Offices (Wildlife), West and East Garo Hills districts, 14 in the Directorate of Tourism, 94 in Commissioner of Taxes, Shillong, 20 in the office of the Executive Engineer of PWD (Roads), Barengapara Division, five in the office of PWD (Roads) Executive Engineer, Nongpoh Division, 63 in the Directorate of Land Records & Survey, 14 in the office of District Health and Medical Officer, Nongpoh, 39 in the office of District Health and Medical Officer, Shillong and 18 in the office of the Medical Superintendent, Civil Hospital, Khliehriat.
“In the Secretariat, there are 119 vacant posts. I have sought RTI information on reasons for not being able to fill up these posts,” Rani said.
He also said he has filed an RTI about the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC).
According to him, there has been no recruitment since 2010 in the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs of athletes who have excelled in sports.
The information indicated that the implementation of the roster system had paved the way for the government to appoint people on contract.
“Till now, there is no circular issued to the various departments,” Rani said, alleging that people close to the political masters are getting jobs.
157 nursing vacancies in Tura Civil Hospital
Documents received via RTI have revealed that there are at least 157 nursing vacancies along with 18 vacancies for various staff posts at the Tura Civil Hospital.
The RTI application, filed by social activist Maxbirth Momin, said the 200-bed hospital is functioning with about 100 staff despite the proposed staff requirement of has revealed that albeit the proposed staff requirement of 271.
The hospital is currently functioning with 57 ANM and GNM nurses.
The RTI application revealed that there are seven vacancies in Group A, nine in Group C and two in Group D in the hospital.
It was also revealed that various departments were asked to fill up the posts in Group A and C while those under group D would be filled up after being approved by the DSC, as and when the same is announced.
“These vacancies need to be filled up with immediate effect. This seems to be the tip of the iceberg. I am sure there are similar requirements in other government-run hospitals as well in Garo Hills if not within the state. These too need filling up as the matter is of public health,” Momin said.
